The unseen power in pain

The unseen power in pain

Pain...It is a feeling that we all experience at some point. It comes in varying degrees and It can be emotional pain or physical pain. Broken leg or broken heart, either way it stops you in your tracks.

My kids were talking about a show they had watched about real super powers. On the show there was a girl who could not feel physical pain and they both thought that would be an amazing power to have! Think of the possibilities: you can fall off your bike and it doesn't hurt, you can fall out of a tree and no worries, even when you bite your tongue it's no problem. They excitedly ran through a list of daring adventures that would be so much better if you did not have to feel pain.

I loved the excitement, but also saw a teachable moment. Pain isn't all bad. It is necessary and powerful on a few different levels. So the discussion began (with, of course, the eye roll of here mom goes again)! The conversation went great and we uncovered some important benefits gained from pain that I now want to share with you.

3 possible & powerful benefits to pain

Preservation- Pain acts like an alarm in our mind and body. When we feel emotional or physical pain, it is telling us that there is a problem that needs attention. The next step is listening to the alarm and talking care of ourselves or asking for help.

Perspective- A huge benefit to pain is perspective. The first time we skin our knee or bump our head, we feel like the sky is falling! We have no idea that there are different levels of pain and that with time it begins to heal and feel better. Not only do we gain perspective for ourselves, but also for the pain of others. When you have suffered a loss or a heartbreak, it breaks open a whole new level of compassion for those going through similar struggles. Pain can push us into new perspectives and deliver both personal growth and a greater capability to empathize with others.

Confidence- In the midst of pain we can feel weak and frustrated, but if we hang on and persevere we can grow in confidence. During both emotionally and physically painful situations, we are forced to step out of our comfort zone. In that new and uncomfortable zone, you can find unknown strength. We are always stronger than we believe ourselves to be and sometimes it is the painful experience that reminds us just how strong we are. Recognizing how far you have come through your struggles, builds confidence.

This year I have seen pain through the eyes of a few of my friends and family members. It is not easy and we never wish for it, but when we are able to recognize the growth and power that can be gained and shared by our experiences...We find the flowers in the thorns.

-Cheers to the One Amazing You!
